Weapon Refinement

Refinement (炼器) is the art of tempering a weapon in heavenly tribulation lightning until it takes on a Dao element. Run /cultivation refine {element} (alias temper) with the weapon in hand and you sit down into a ritual much like a breakthrough - the lightning falls on you, not the blade.

It unlocks at Qi Condensation (Refinement-Unlock-Realm) and is enabled by default.

Run /cultivation refine with no element to see what your held weapon currently is, and what one more tempering would cost, take and risk.

The Ritual

  • The chunk you sit in must hold at least Refinement-Min-Chunk-Qi (40) Spirit Vein Qi - a far lower bar than a breakthrough, since refinement is meant to be doable anywhere reasonable.
  • The banked Qi is spent up front, when the ritual starts, not on success. That mirrors how abandoning a breakthrough costs you a stage, and stops anyone rolling the ritual repeatedly for free by standing up whenever the vein runs dry.
  • Only one ritual at a time. A refinement cannot be layered onto a breakthrough or advancement already under way.
  • Tribulation lightning strikes you on the usual Tribulation-Strike-Interval-Seconds for Refinement-Tribulation-Damage-Percent-Of-Max-Health (10%) of your max health, still scaled by realm and still lethal if Tribulation-Lethal is on. Tempering a blade can kill you.
Variable Name:Default Value:Description:
Refinement-Base-Qi-Cost200Cost of a tier I attempt.
Refinement-Qi-Cost-Tier-Multiplier1.6Multiplied per tier beyond the first.
Refinement-Base-Duration-Seconds45Length of a tier I ritual.
Refinement-Duration-Seconds-Per-Tier15Added per tier beyond the first.
Refinement-Max-Tier9The ceiling - tiers are shown as I through IX.

Success, Failure and Risk

Variable Name:Default Value:Description:
Refinement-Base-Success-Chance0.95Chance at tier I.
Refinement-Success-Chance-Loss-Per-Tier0.08Subtracted per tier beyond the first.
Refinement-Min-Success-Chance0.15Floor - no attempt is ever more hopeless than this.
Refinement-Demote-On-Fail-From-Tier4At or above this target tier, failure also costs a tier.
Refinement-Destroy-On-FailfalseIf true, a demoting failure destroys the weapon outright.

At the defaults that works out to 95% at tier I, sliding down to the 15% floor by the upper tiers. Below tier IV a failure only wastes the banked Qi. From tier IV up it also knocks the weapon down a tier - and a weapon demoted out of tier I simply becomes a plain weapon again.

The command warns you before an attempt that carries the demotion risk.

What a Refined Weapon Does

Variable Name:Default Value:Description:
Refinement-Damage-Bonus-Percent-Per-Tier4Outgoing damage bonus per tier - +36% at tier IX.
Refinement-Resonance-Bonus-Percent15Added when the weapon’s element matches its wielder’s own dao.

A refined weapon also supplies its element to the combat system for a wielder who has no dao of their own: the damage converts to that element and takes the full Wu Xing counter cycle, bonus and penalty alike. That is the point of refinement for a cultivator who has not reached Foundation Establishment yet, or who never chose an element. When the weapon’s element does match your dao, the resonance bonus stacks on top of everything else.

The tier and element live on the item’s own metadata and are shown in its tooltip. Re-tempering an already-refined weapon with a different element starts that new element over at tier I, so switching a finished weapon’s affinity throws away everything you put into it.

Command:Description:Permission:
/cultivation refineReport the held weapon’s refinement and what the next tier costs. Alias: temper.cultivation
/cultivation refine {element}Begin a tempering ritual with that Dao element.cultivation
